After a few delays and a great deal of speculations, Mahindra sets it straight in an interview by Dow Jones Newswires as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
While the first few batches of pickups will be assembled in India, Mahindra is planning on getting Navistar to build their TR pickups on one of their US factories. This move will allow Mahindra to avoid the chicken tax, which imposes a 25% tariff on light duty trucks produced outside the US.
“Once we decide to assemble in the U.S., we would look at Navistar’s facilities to see if there’s something available which is right for us and if that works out,” said Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra’s automotive division. “We will certainly give priority to using Navistar’s facilities.”
Mahindra and Navistar are already working together in two joint ventures in India: one is for trucks and buses and the other is for the diesel engines for the said vehicles. According to Mr. Goenka, contract manufacturing of their pickups will be more cost-effective as compared to buying a factory in the US, since “the investment won’t be more than a few million dollars.”
The Scorpio-based pickups to be sold in the US this year will be imported from India and delivered to US shores starting the 2nd quarter of 2010.

2007- 2008- 2009- 2010 Febuary , now 2nd quarter!!!! when when when ???? april, may, june?????????? what!!!! wait again and see if the units from India sell??? I want mine NOW!!!!!!!Globle is a bust< I find out more from the net, what is it with this outfit???I am wondering if parts will be available? brake something and what, wait for the plant to gear up 2011-2012 maybe 2nd quarter 2013!!!! better yet ship it from India!!!!!!! I wonder if the powers to be have any idea the negetive effect this is doing to us ,that wait for this great product and then my kids lemonaid stand has a better chance of opening this summer(2010)!
This is a joke. You have lost all credibility with these constant delays. You had a possible customer but now I and many others will buy another brand regardless how this turns out. See you in 2012, 2013, 2014… Actually just keep them in India. Thank you for your inability to getrdone.
Mahindra and Mahindra will make its maiden entry into the heavy trucks segment with Mahindra Navistar, the joint venture with International Truck, USA. This will promote the Mahindra and the US market will be open for the pickup trucks by Mahindra in the Automobile Industry.
I’ve been waiting for years for this truck to come out. So far it seems like this isn’t really happening. For one the news concerning its release has been minimal. Secondly the Mahindra site has not really changed either. Lastly the release date keeps getting put off.
Additionally, I have to say that the prices I’ve seen for this truck, which is in the lower 20′s isn’t acceptable. For that price I could buy an F-150, a Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, or just about any other brand of truck. The only thing Mahindra has going for them is that they have a small, no-nonsense truck with a diesel engine. I’d be willing to take a chance on an unproven truck for say- $15k. But at 20k I might as well buy another Tacoma since my current Tacoma has 230,000 miles with no problems so far.
What will sell this truck is the fact that its almost retro. It looks like something from the 70′s which I actually really dig. It looks and functions like a truck. People will appreciate this aspect in a world of overly luxurious, car-like trucks.
But you guys have got to get this thing to market and soon. My suggestion is to just go ahead and bring it here. Try to get the prices down to a lower level. Say in the 12-15k range. I think people would be willing to have something that’s not exactly perfect and more functional at that price. I could care less about the interior and more so about the mechanical quality. I think I speak for most other buyers. But again… 20k is a bit steep for an unfamiliar truck from India being sold in the US where the pickup truck reins supreme and US and Japanese manufactures have brought it to an almost art-like perfection.
Bring out the truck sooner than later.
I couldn’t agree w/bob more. My poor old 98 Isuzu just turned 131k have been waiting for Mahindra for ever. Come on guys get it together.
Sadly, this seems to be a common way of doing business for India firms. Many products are promised at a good price on a great schedule. But it takes more time and more costs when the product is actually available for sale.
Mahindra should do the needful and either bring the truck or announce that they are not going to bring the truck.
The problem with getting the truck in the price range Bob mentions is that the truck will be feminized for the US market. My business needs Good, high MPG, long lasting and affordable trucks.
As they install leather seats, power windows, keyless entry, carpeted floors, AM/FM/CD players and the like the price will go up. That stuff is nice if you want it, but it would be nice to have them available without for “work” trucks.
An automatic, with vinyl seats and floor mats, maybe AC is all we need. Fleet sales and people working in the trades need tough stripped down vehicles that get good mileage and have fewer things for employees to break.
Built like that, the price would be cheaper. We are looking at purchasing 2 this year if they are priced right.
Delay after delay after delay is killing this potentially winning truck before it even launches. I like many of you have been waiting… a long time to buy one of these trucks, bare bones, high mpg, durable with a big payload. No fru fru extras, but I may have to buy something else since I don’t really know how much longer I have to wait and I will need to make some strategic business decisions very soon.
Mahindra will squander the potential lead they have on the new Ranger. Pick up truck sales will continue to decline with the rise in fuel. Ford will not be able to ignore the small truck market, Ranger will be modernized.
New Toyota Prerunner 4cylinder is 22m,tows 500_lbs. This retro-truck will tow 5500_lbs, and 24hrs a day with a 30mpg diesel. My 200M Sonoma 4cylinder does 25mpg and barely pulls its own rear bumper…I just hope that there are enough buyers who need a real, small, pickup.
To Mahindra Trucks; I been waiting for a decent midsized diesel work truck and can wait no longer. Sorry Mahindra & Global Losers but with delays past 4 years? Who do you think you are NASA? You say there are dealerships lined up in NY & CT. But no links to those dealerships so even if there is something there I can’t find it. Its beginning to appear that you don’t want to try to break into the U.S. Market even with a weak global economy. It would be easier to upgrade the suspension on a Ford Ranger strenghten the frame and install a small industrial diesel. Smell you late homie.
Mahindra’s ridiculus delays are mostly of their own making but I can’t help but wonder if the moving goalposts of constantly changing EPA standards, combined with help from the hopey changey marxist administration- who are in bed with the unions, are
keeping this s-10 and ranger killer away from our shores. Mahindra execs would be hesitant to say anything derogatory about that so they just keep delaying hoping Barry Soetero and his minions will eventually call off the dogs of (truck) war.
I’m getting conflicting information. First they said it was going to be a 2.2L 4 cyl diesel engine, now I’m reading it’s a 2.4L engine. I want the smaller engine for better mileage.
Then I read, first Mahindra was going to come out with the diesel and shortly after the diesel/hybrid, now I hear the diesel hybrid will be out in a few months in the later half of 2010.
I want the diesel hybrid. the name of the game for me is the MOST MPG I can get and the hybrid is the way. I hope they have the foresight to make it plug-in diesel / hybrid, so it can trickle charge over night while it’s parked.
Thanks
this launch delay is really frustrating…I mean each time you delay the launch, you dilute my love for this product. I am not thinking to buy the truck but I am seriously thinking about the Scorpio suv. Come on guys…just meet your deadlines…
The real delay is soft demand in the US and an unfavorable climate for diesels due to stabilization of fuel prices. The chicken tax problem is questionable..all they have to do is disconnect the drive shaft from the rear wheels and there is no tax. Don’t know why that works, but that is what Daimler does on the Sprinter and they don’t pay that tax. The trucks come off the boat and the drive shaft or drive train is hooked up in the usa.
I am really looking forward to seeing these trucks. I really want a diesel and these are ugly like a rover and really cool at the same time.
Hope they are priced aggressively, though. If they come in the $20′s, it’s going to be tough for them. But, a crew in the 18 range would be selling like hot cakes.
Delay after delay; no matter from the numbers I’m seeing they did a good job of pricing themselves out of the market. It’s unknown and will be a tuff sell at 20+, no matter how good it is. I’ve been waiting over a year and have come to the conclusion to get a Toyota, Yes it’s gas but I can get it I know what the resale will be if I need that and I know I can get it fixed IF it should need it.
Like i’v said it’s another YUGO all show and no go its a pipe dream for Mahindra to be a global auto maker
These trucks are pretty cool and they would definitely throw a change-up to the current diesel market in the US. I don’t agree with the above post that claims there is a soft demand in the US. I feel that the demand is as strong as it’s ever been.
I’m still interested in the lil truck, if they’ed get off the pot and get to work getting it here. All of our domestic manufacturers have dumped plans for a small diesel truck and Nissan and Toyota putting theirs on hold due to our acidic diesel tearing up their prototypes (their dealers words not mine); we really won’t have a choice soon. And the comments above about buying a bigger truck kind of defeats the purpose of a small economical truck that we (the public that is demanding them) want. Recently I emailed our domestic companies public relations depts. about the coming Mahindra truck and I was told that according to their marketing research Americans don’t want a small basic diesel truck. When and where did they do their surveys(in the cities), I’ve never been asked in my driving history(in 30 years), I’ve never met anyone who has been asked (in 30 years). So it looks like the big three needs new input ( say like mass emails from the one buying their products (us)) to put them in the correct path…
Unless the big three get smart it looks like I’ll be sending my money to india and a tr40 will be in my driveway when and if they get here…
Good to see both companies are getting together…….Mahindra is one of the biggest auto making company in India…..and their tie up Navistar will definitely produce good result……
Mahindra is one of the most reputed brand all over the world. It is good for mahindra and navistar if they both get success in USA. I think this both are so reputed that it wont be very difficult for them to introduce and get succcess in Scorpio-based pickups trucks in USA.
DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF TRUCKS WILL BE HERE BEFORE 2011
Crazy to buy one of these! Truck can’t get here, what do you think parts availability will look like? US truck mileage is improving and promises to get better, Mahindra missed their window.
The trucks will get here when pigs fly. dont you get it by now?
